Laughter and happiness: Do you smile enough?

Think about the moment in which your partner arrives home and smiles at
you or when you come across a stranger and he/she smiles at you.
People who tend to smile quite often also transmit a sense of self-confidence,
charisma and charm. They are also healthier people.

How many times do you smile per day?

A child smiles between 400 and 500 times a day. Smiling is an innate ability
of human beings which is reduced over the years due to concerns and
worries.
If we don’t take care of ourselves, the times that we smile per day as adults
can be reduced up to an average of 20-25 times.

What can you achieve by smiling?

Smiling improves your health.

Facial muscles are connected to our brain. Even with a fake smile, our brain
believes that we are genuinely laughing and releases endorphins, serotonin
and natural painkillers. These substances relax the muscles, bring oxygen
to our body and regulate our heart rate.
A smile has also been related with the reduction of stress hormones such as
adrenalin, cortisol and dopamine and the reduction of blood pressure.

You feel happier.

When you smile, your brain thinks that you are happy and releases
substances which actually help you to feel cheerful as it has been proven by
the following research compilation.
In one of these studies, the participants had to hold a pencil with their mouth
for a while so that their faces would draw a smile. At the end of this test, most
participants confirmed a mood improvement.
Don’t you believe it yet? Try to burst out laughing in front of a mirror for ten
seconds, even if you feel sad.

Greater success in your social relationships.

When you smile at someone, even if it is to a stranger in the street, you are
likely to receive that smile back. Half the people smile back at a stranger as it
is showed in the following study.
Smiling doesn’t just bring you joy but it also sends a message to other
people of what kind of person you are (sociable, trustworthy and
approachable).
A study of the University of Harvard showed that a happy person is likely to
make happy to those surrounding him/her over 25% times more than
someone who is feeling sad.

Experiment with a smile:

Start to smile more often. It is free. You will improve your life and those
surrounding you. I recommend a one-day experiment in which you smile as
much as you can to finally analyse the results at the end of the day.

Don’t miss the 31-day smile experiment carried out by Isra García. Its results
leave no doubt about it.

The amalgam filling in 2019: are they the best choice?

What is an amalgam filling?

Metal fillings are those made of amalgam as a result of a mercury alloy with metals
such as silver, copper or tin. This material has been used for over a century and meant
a significant revolution in Dentistry.

However, they are hardly used nowadays. They are dark and therefore, not the best
aesthetic option. Your teeth are also likely to be darkened and stained by the filling.
Their main advantage is their long life which can be up to 30 years in comparison to
composite fillings which can last around 10 years.

Are amalgam fillings harmful for our health?

The fact that the alloy of amalgam fillings has mercury among its components has been
a quite polemic issue for some time. However, no illness related to them has ever
been proved in spite of the ongoing scientific research about that matter.

Mercury is toxic only in big quantities but not in those used for a dental filling and also it
is not harmful for our health under the conditions in which it is used in dentistry.

The WHO ensures the safety and efficiency of amalgam. You can read more
information about here.

Even though they are not harmful for our health, amalgam fillings have been replaced
by composite fillings for years.

Let’s find out some information about them.

Composite fillings: the current alternative to amalgam
fillings.

Composite fillings are made of a mixture of glass or quartz and have a long lifespan
and are crack-resistant by small and medium repairs.

Composite has a similar colour to the teeth and offers the advantage of adhering itself
to the decay. This allows a more conservative repair of the affected tooth since
less dental structure has to be removed when the tooth is prepared.

Moreover, composite fillings are smaller than amalgam fillings and generally, they
are applied slower than amalgam fillings since the tooth has to be clean and dry while
the decay is being filled up.

Prevention is the key.

Even those who are very concerned with their dental hygiene can end up having
decays. A decay is detected soon enough to be solved with a small filling but the longer
it is left undetected, the bigger the filling will be.

As parents we want our children to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile by showing them good hygiene and care habits.

When it comes to make a decision about an orthodontic treatment when need to know when the right moment is to start shaping our children’s smile?

Not only our teeth shape our smile’s look but also our jaw bones whose size and shape are going to determine our our teeth grow and are distributed.

Currently it is possible to influence the way our bones and teeth shape thanks to interceptive orthodontics.

What is interceptive orthodontics?

It is also known as removable orthodontics because it is not fixed to our teeth. It is used in children from 6 to 11 years since their maxillary bones are still growing and shaping.

Because it is not a permanent orthodontics, it is a very simple procedure for children. The treatment lasts around 6 to 18 months provided that the child wears it the appropriate time during the day which has been recommended by his/her dentist.

Maybe you are wondering know what this treatment is like. In interceptive orthodontics acrylic plates are held in the dental arch to expand the arch itself, correct crossbite and move certain teeth.

That is the reason why the best time for first visiting an orthodontist is by the time the child is 6.

If some defects in the allignment or bite should be found, a thorough study, treatment and follow-up will be performed according to each case.

What is it interceptive orthodontics useful for?

Its aim is to achieve the correct growth and position of our mouth’s bone so that there is enough space for the teeth to grow aligned from the beginning.

Its main advantage is the future complications or defects are avoided such as tooth removal, long and complex orthodontic treatments and surgical treatments to modify the size and position of the bones in adults.

When do I need interceptive orthodontics?

The most common adjustments performed during this treatment are the following:

  • Create space between teeth so that they don’t grow crowded.
  • Expand the bones of the dental arch.
  •  Boost or stop jaw growth if it is too big or too small.

In most cases, corrective orthodontics is necessary after an interceptive orthodontic treatment but the position and size of the jaw bones won’t need fixing and therefore the corrective treatment will be much easier, cheaper and shorter.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Paula Echevarría or David Bustamante are just some of the celebrities with a bright smile and it is thanks to dental veneers.

This dental treatment allows you to enjoy a perfect smile and improves your self-esteem and your confidence when smiling. The feeling of having a perfect smile is very rewarding.

Currently dental veneers are available for all who have imperfect teeth (chipped, cracked, etc.) of any kind or simply just want to enjoy a perfect smile.

Let’s find out what dental veneers are and some of their features.

What is a dental veneer?

A dental veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or other materials which is fitted over the front surface of a tooth. This layer is fully sculpted for each patient so that it has a very natural look. It is a dental restorative procedure to achieve a perfect smile in shape and colour.

A dental veneer is between 0.3 and 1.5 mm thick and can be made of composite, ceramic or lithium disilicate. The price, life and look of a veneer depend on the material it is made of.

How long can I wear a dental veneer?

Composite veneers usually last between 5 and 10 years; porcelain veneers are the most resistant and last between 10 and 15 years while veneers made of lithium disilicate may last over two times as much as the porcelain ones. In addition, lithium disilicate veneers are thinner (0.3-0.5 mm).

This procedure must be performed by your dentist since the attachment of the veneer to your teeth will depend on a correct procedure. You also must perform the right care of the veneer as a patient.

How are veneers placed?

The first step is to study the smile look you would like to achieve after the veneers have been placed. For that, you will need appropriate aesthetic advice.

Preparing the teeth.

A small amount of enamel is removed with acid for a few seconds from the teeth. After that, they are cleaned with water. In this way, the dentist makes sure that the veneer will be fully fixed on the tooth.

Veneers sculpture

The dentist makes a mold of the prepared teeth and this impression is sent for the veneers to be made. In this way, veneers will completely fit in shape your teeth. A natural look is therefore achieved.

Fitting the veneers

Once attached to the teeth, veneers are light cured for a perfect attachment and longer duration on the tooth.

Patient’s experience:

Patients won´t suffer any side effects nor discomfort. Patients experience an improvement of their smiles and except from particular situations such as accidents, veneers will not chip.

How can I choose the best orthodontic treatment for me?

Are you going to start an orthodontic treatment? Over the time it has become easier and more affordable to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile.

The key is to know what it is more important for you: the treatment period, the price, a discreet treatment…

What is the best orthodontic treatment?

There are several types of orthodontic treatment and each of them has advantages and disadvantages. The most frequently used are the following: invisible orthodontics, sapphire braces, ceramic braces and metallic braces.

There isn’t one perfect type for everybody. It depends on how long do you have to wear it, its price, if it feels more or less comfortable, the shape of your mouth.

So, how do I know which type of treatment suits me best?

A previous study and a proper diagnosis has to be carried out.

WHAT IS A PREVIOUS STUDY OR ORTHODONTIC STUDY?

The goal of this diagnosis is to define which problems you may have and determine the best solution for them. You may need your teeth to be aligned, to widen or narrow space between your teeth, to correct your bite or even some teeth should be removed if it is necessary.

How many steps does it take to perform an orthodontic study?

5 STEPS:

  1. Frontal X-Ray. It is used to check your mouth general condition because some details cannot be seen with the naked eye.
  2. Side X-Ray. Its goal is to study angles, proportions, and distance mouth to jaw. With this type of X-Rays some issues could be detected which may need more specific tests.
  3. DENTAL CT. It is not usually a necessary test but if some unusual issues are detected, it is used to obtain 3D images of the jaw bones or mouth’s soft tissues.
  4. Photo report. It is performed several times during the treatment. Shots are taken from different angles of the patient’s mouth, face and other relevant details. These images are a complement to the rest of tests performed and enable a follow-up of the wished treatment development.
  5. Creation of the model: thanks to 3D scanning and printing, an exact copy of your mouth can be achieved. It is a real-scale copy of your mouth to know every millimetre of the treatment.

Once the result of every test has been obtained and studied, we help you to choose the best orthodontic treatment for you according to your possibilities and preferences.

6 advantages of immediate implants vs. standard implants

Do you need a tooth implant?

Removing a tooth to insert an implant is always the last option used by dental professionals since it is always better to repair the damaged tooth.

But when the only solution is an implant, there are several options to choose from.

Thanks to the latest improvements such as 3D printing, state-of-the-art techniques and materials used for our dental health, implants can be placed in 24 hours with optimal results.

These implants are called immediate implants or immediate loading implants. Let’s find out the difference between them and traditional implants.

6 advantages of immediate implants vs. standard implants.

  1. Only 24/48 hours instead of 3-6 months for standard implants. Thanks to the latest computer-guided technology, an implant and the provisional crown can be placed in the same day.
  2. The function of the replaced tooth can be returned in just one day like chewing and talking (if it was affected by the lack of teeth).
  3. Without stitches vs. those required by traditional implants which should be removed later.
  4. Highly reduced pain and discomfort. Since the same space of the original tooth is used to place the implant, neither cuts nor bone carving or gums displacement are necessary whereas they usually are necessary for standard implants.
  5. Natural look for your teeth and gums from the first day. After the first session of implant placement, your mouth will look completely as usual. By standard implants, there is a hole in which the screw shall be placed until the crown is inserted six months later.

Can an immediate implant always be placed?

There is no patient who prefers standard implants to immediate implants. Unfortunately there are some cases in which the placement of immediate implants is not possible. Some of these cases are the following:

  • There is an infection in the area of the implant.
  • There is not enough bone where the implant should be placed.
  • There are severe gums issues.
  • There are bad habits such as bruxism.

Don’t know where to start? Visit our clinic and we will help you to find what you need.

Dental Spa: can I relax at the dentist?

Feeling relaxed is the last thing that comes to your mind when you think of going to the dentist. A Dental Spa is a place supported by emotional odontology which is increasingly becoming part of modern clinics. To this approach is focused on the patient’s feelings to turn any treatment is a more pleasant and less stressful experience.

A Dental Spa can make each visit to the dentist a comfortable and pleasant experience by offering wellness treatments to help you relax before and after your dental treatment.

Why a Dental Spa?

Pediatric dentists decorate their surgery to make children feel happier and more relaxed by enjoying a playful environment with colorful walls, toys and full of child-friendly furniture.

Over 25% grown-ups do not usually visit the dentist due to fear to the health professional.

After much research clinics have started to introduce new ways of achieving a relaxing environment for their patients due to their positive effect on the treatment. The goal is that the patients feels spoiled.

What is exactly a Dental Spa?

There are many options among the dental clinics which support the philosophy of the Dental Spa. It can be used before starting the treatment so you feel relaxed. It can be used during the treatment so the smell, sounds or feelings are much more pleasant. And it can be used after the treatment to reduce stress and favour healing. Let’s see some of the most common uses of the Dental Spa:

Before starting:

Picture this. You arrive to your dental clinic and instead of a waiting room, a soft lighting, relaxing music awaits you. After a while on a heat lounge chair and surrounded of a beautiful smell, there is a facial massage for you. Wouldn’t that make a difference in your state of mind?

During the treatment:

  • You receive a set of headphones with relaxing music.
  • Your favourite videos or relaxing images are displayed on a screen.
  • Aromatherapy system to eliminate the typical smell of a dental surgery which may cause stress and tension even unconsciously.
  • Virtual environment for the most technology prone patients: a set of virtual reality glasses.

After the treatment:

  • Aromatherapy.
  • Cryotherapy with a gel mask.
  • Lymphatic drainage on the operated area to speed recovery.

And there is much more. Haven’t you felt the experience yet?  Visit our clinic or our website to find out more and start enjoying your visit to the dentist.

8 REASONS TO CHOOSE IMMEDIATE-LOAD IMPLANTS

If you have lost a tooth, some or all of them, dental implants are one of the best options. Dental implants are resistant and generally, last for many years and even an entire life.

Up until now, placing an implant involved a 4 to 8 month-treatment in order to regain the total aesthetics and function of the mouth. However, with immediate-load implants, this can be achieved in just a few days.

WHAT ARE IMMEDIATE-LOAD IMPLANTS or IMPLANTS WITHOUT BONE?

Immediate-load implant dentistry is an advanced technique that allows to place implants and fixed prosthesis in the same day without the need for bone grafts.

It involves placing the implant in the socket where the tooth used to be. Once the implants are placed and depending on each patient, a temporary fixed prosthesis is placed within 24 hours.

In addition to this, there are other reasons why you may want to choose immediate-load implants. Find out more about them.

8 REASONS TO CHOOSE IMMEDIATE-LOAD IMPLANTS

  1. No stitches.
  2. Ideal for emergencies: is quick and safe, making it ideal for managing dental emergencies that require dental implants.
  3. Quick healing, maintaining the aesthetics of the gums and, unlike in delayed rehabilitation, with no need for waiting from 3 to 6 months.
  4. Surgery under local anaesthesia, without discomfort and without pain.
  5. Natural results for your teeth and gums.
  6. Compared with the conventional technique of dental implants, minor differences in cost despite its significant benefits.
  7. No false teeth. Implants and fixed teeth that feel like yours.
  8. In only 24-48 hours: in only 2 days you can have your implant and temporary crown placed.

HOW CAN I KNOW WHETHER I NEED AN IMMEDIATE-LOAD IMPLANT?

Immediate-load implants are used in patients having all types of requirements and needs, but in some cases, this is the only possible technique.

Immediate-load implants are particularly recommended if:

  • You have insufficient maxillary bone.
  • You suffer from a severe periodontal disease.
  • You suffer from maxillary atrophy due to bone resorption.

If any of these cases resonate with you, please visit our website and find out what we can do for your smile in Guido Audisio Clinica Dental.

Five secrets on how to take care of your teeth this Christmas

Christmas is here, and the overindulgence that comes with it may result in not starting the new year with your best smile.

How to take care of your oral health during Christmas?

1. Do you like nougat? Choose hard nougat.

For your teeth, and your health in general, hard nougat is better than soft nougat, as it contains less sugar. Mind you, be careful when you bite it. You can also choose dark chocolate (70%), which has antioxidant and cardioprotective properties, as well as being delicious.

2. Avoid sudden temperature changes inside your mouth

During Christmas, it is common to combine cold and hot courses. Sudden changes in temperature increase tooth sensitivity, and can even break a tooth. ¿Why this happens?

The dental pulp contains blood vessels. Sudden changes in temperature can lead to inflammation of these blood vessels, causing pain.

3. Eat superfoods for your mouth.

Crunchy foods: carrots, apples and cucumbers act as cleansers, stopping plaque build-up.

Cheese helps to lessen the acidic pH inside the mouth. It is enough with a small portion of cheese at the end of a meal. It also contains calcium, which helps to protect the surface of the teeth.

Spinachs and leafy greens contain plenty of fibre, which is excellent for the teeth. This is so because as you chew them, you release plenty of saliva, cleaning the teeth whilst neutralizing acids in your mouth.

Water. Indeed, simply drinking water cleans your teeth, removes acids and maintains the pH inside the mouth. Water also contains fluorine.

4. Your teeth do not like too much alcohol.

Watch the colour of what you drink. Chromogens, such as wine, coffee and sugary drinks, adhere to the enamel and stain it.

In addition, alcoholic drinks dry out the mouth. Saliva maintains teeth humid, and helps to remove plaque and bacteria from the surface of the teeth.

5. Brush your teeth at least at bedtime.

If you cannot brush your teeth during the day, do it at least before going to bed. The decrease in salivary flux when we sleep leads to changes in pH, increasing the risk of oral health problems.

The Guido Audisio Clínica Dental team, wants the best for your mouth and of course, to wish you a Merry Christmas.
